Posters of the Revolutionary Era
This Russian Museum exhibition catalogue publishes much more than the anthologized propaganda posters of other survey books. The curators and authors have selected works that show how the propaganda poster evolved as an independent genre both in subject and style. The earliest examples follow the conventions of popular prints (lubki) and folk tale imagery of the tsarist period - images often tell a story with satirical and grotesque depictions of enemies. Prevalent in the early examples is a realism akin to nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art. In the early 1920s a more modern and spare form of poster art drew on experiments of the avant-garde to create new styles.

Baranano K., Kamensky M. Jacques Lipchitz (1891-1973). A Retrospective
The Moscow Museum of Modern Art is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Jacques .Lipchitz, an outstanding avant-garde sculptor of the 20th century and a prominent representative of the School of Paris, to be held in Russia. Lipchitz was one of the most notable sculptors who adopted the principles of Cubism and persistently applied them in his works, gaining recognition from both connoisseurs and the general public. Later, moving away from Cubism, he kept his expressiveness and daring approach to form. .Published to coincide with the exhibition in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the present edition reflects on the history of sculpture in the 20th century, factors that shaped its development, and Lipchitz's circle of artists and friends, who influenced his approach. Jacques Lipchitz marked a turning point in the perception of art and, along with Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, became a symbol of the new art. Along with the artworks presented in the exhibition, the catalogue contains additional materials such as an article by the exhibition curator Kosme de Baranano about the sculptor's life and work, an essay by an art historian Mikhail Kamen-sky about Lipchitz's visit to the USSR in 1935, interesting facts about the sculptor's life, previously unpublished images from the archives of Musee d'Art et d'Histoire du JudaTsme in Paris as well as photographs of sculptures and graphic works from the collections of Marlborough Gallery, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and private collections. .This retrospective exhibition is a continuation of the museum's exhibition program aimed at introducing visitors to the work of important modernist artists. The project is prepared in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Israel. .I would like to express my sincere gratitude to The Estate of Jacques Lipchitz, Marlborough Gallery and Kosme de Baranano for their help and support in organizing the exhibition, as well as to the team of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art for the successfully realised project.

Volkmar Essers. Henri Matisse
The work of Henri Matisse (1869—1954) reflects an ongoing belief in the power of brilliant colors and simple forms. Though famed in particular for his paintings, Matisse also worked with drawing, sculpture, lithography, stained glass, and collage, developing his unique cut-out medium when old age left him unable to stand and paint.Matisse's subjects were often conventional: nudes, portraits, and figures in landscapes, Oriental scenes, and interior views, but in his handling of bold color and fluid draftsmanship, he secured his place as a 20th-century master. It was Matisse's palette that particularly thrilled the modern imagination. With vivid blue, amethyst purple, egg-yolk yellow, and many shades beyond he liberated his work from a meticulous representation of reality and sought instead a “vital harmony," often referring to music as an inspiration or analogy for his work. From vast patterned panels to simple and tender portraits, this book introduces the full reach and creativity of Matisse's career, spanning his early work within the Fauvism movement right through to his latter-year projects such as Jazz and the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence.

Icons of Modern Art. The Shchukin Collection
The Fondation Louis Vuitton's unprecedented exhibition brings together one hundred and thirty masterpieces, among the most iconic of the collection created in Moscow by the great Russian art patron, Sergei Shchukin. From Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe (1866) by Claude Monet, the hieratic Mardi gras (1888-90) by Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin's Tahitian odalisque Eh quoi, tu es jalouse? (1892), the luminescent panel L'Atelier du peintre (1911) by Henri Matisse, to conclude with Pablo Picasso's Trois femmes (1908) and the collage Compotier, grappe de raisin, poire coupee (1914), the magnificence of Shchukin's collection is most fittingly exhibited here. Extended by a group of sorne thirty major works from the Russian avant-gardes, including Counter Relief (1916) by Vladimir Tatlin, Green Stripe (1917) by Olga Rozanova, and Kazimir Malevich's monochrome painting, Black Suprematie Square (1929), Icons of Modern Art covers the extreme breadth of this journey through nineteenth- and twentieth-century creation. The presentation of these exceptional works, where our collective gaze cornes together, constitutes an exemplary "painting lesson."

Museum of Proletarian Culture. The Industrialization of Bohemia
Try and imagine what a museum of creativity looks like. This book tells of a challenging exhibition held in one of the major Russian museums-the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Arseniy Zhilyaev created a conceptual project for an imaginary museum. The viewer sees into the future after the liberation/revolution and is confronted with a radically different outlook on the history of twentieth-century art. At the core of the exhibition, there turns out to be a complex dialectic in the relationship between museum and artist: how does an artists work come to be exhibited in a museum? When and why does an artist engage in artistic creation outside the museum walls? Is the museum the space in which a "happening" takes place? The book includes texts by Russian and foreign art critics as well as a number of previously untranslated Soviet avant-garde texts about museums and proletarian folklore. 0
